Sputnik news agency on August 26 quoted an announcement from the US Department of Commerce saying that 5 Russian research institutes have been listed on the sanctions list, including the 48th Central Scientific Research Institute of the Russian Ministry of Defense.

The US government agency accused sanctioned Russian research institutes of being involved in the development of biological and chemical weapons.

Being included in the US Department of Commerce’s sanctions list means that US authorities will impose restrictions on the export and transportation of goods according to current regulations on these countries.

In addition to the 48th Central Scientific Research Institute, the US also imposed sanctions on the 33rd Central Research and Testing Institute of the Russian Ministry of Defense and the State Research Institute of Organic Chemistry and Technology.

According to official information, the 33rd Central Testing and Research Institute is Russia’s leading research institute in the fields of radiation, biological protection and chemistry.

Sputnik V, Russia’s first Covid-19 vaccine, was developed by the Gamaleya Research Institute in Moscow and the Russian Ministry of Defense.

The Russian Ministry of Health confirmed that Sputnik V has undergone all the necessary tests and has been proven to be capable of producing immunity against the corona virus.

According to the US Department of Commerce’s announcement, 60 entities from 9 countries have been placed on the sanctions list.

Why does the US impose sanctions on Russia?

Tiberio Graziani, head of the Italy-based Institute for Global Trends and Foresight Analysis, said that “sanctions imposed by the US against Russian vaccine research institutes have led to an attack

The Italian scholar described US sanctions as a `crime against humanity` when causing difficulties for the leading vaccine research center in the context of the Covid-19 pandemic breaking out worldwide.

After Russia registered the Covid-19 vaccine, the US and many Western countries were skeptical about the safety and effectiveness of this vaccine.

“With these sanctions, the US is seeking to hinder Russia’s development and production of Covid-19 vaccines in the competition for scientific superiority.

According to Earl Rasmussen, researcher and deputy director of the Eurasian Center, this continues to be a move that shows the US using sanctions as a means to fight fair competition and hinder markets.

Expert Graziani said that `America is at a historic moment but faces great difficulties and is afraid of losing its leadership role in science and technology.`

Both experts Vermaut and Graziani agreed that the latest US sanctions are more related to domestic political competition and the upcoming US presidential election.
